Petition to Save St. Pius X Property for Towson Community Recreation and Green Space

The Issue

We, the undersigned, residents of Towson and surrounding communities, urge County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. and the Archdiocese of Baltimore to preserve the St. Pius X property at 6428 York Road as green space for community recreation.

Background: The Towson area is facing a critical shortage of recreational fields due to significant population growth and increased participation in youth sports. The closure of St. Pius X School in 2021 has presented a unique opportunity to acquire acres of land, including athletic fields, that can serve the needs of our community.

Reasons for Preservation:

    1. Field Shortage: The Towson Recreation Council, serving over 7,000 participants, struggles with limited field space, forcing children's practices and games to start as late as 9:30 p.m. on weekdays. Acquiring the St. Pius X property would alleviate this pressure.
    2. Historical and Community Value: The property has been a vital part of the Towson community for decades, serving as a space for sports, education, and community events. It holds sentimental value for many residents who grew up playing and attending school there.
    3. Environmental Benefits: Preserving this land as green space will help reduce impervious surfaces, benefiting the environment and contributing to the overall well-being of the community.
    4. Future Planning: The planned redevelopment of Towson High School will make existing fields inaccessible, further increasing the need for additional recreational space.
    5. Economic Feasibility: The property's current appraised value is $2.25 million, while the asking price is $4.6 million. Downzoning and funding from Program Open Space can make this acquisition financially viable, with your support.

Call to Action: We request County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. to allocate county funds to purchase the St. Pius X property and preserve it as recreational space. We also call upon the Archdiocese of Baltimore to consider the community’s needs and work with the county to facilitate this acquisition.

By signing this petition, we express our strong support for preserving the St. Pius X property for the benefit of current and future generations in Towson.
