Petition to Save Haiti: A Call for Global Solidarity and Action
The Issue
To: The Governments of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Global Leaders
We, the undersigned, call on the international community to urgently intervene in the crisis facing Haiti in 2024.
Haiti, once a beacon of independence and resilience, is now at a critical crossroads. Political instability, escalating violence, and economic despair have ravaged this beautiful nation, leaving its people in a state of suffering. The ongoing humanitarian crisis has deepened, with millions of Haitians facing hunger, insecurity, and lack of access to basic services. As of 2024, the situation is dire, and immediate action is needed to prevent further catastrophe.
1. Humanitarian Crisis
Haiti is experiencing an unprecedented level of violence, primarily from armed gangs that control significant portions of the country. These groups engage in kidnapping, extortion, and widespread destruction, instilling fear in the population and preventing access to essential services such as healthcare, food distribution, and education. Over 5 million people are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with the country facing alarming levels of malnutrition and disease.
2. Political Instability
The absence of a functioning government has left Haiti vulnerable to exploitation. The assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, coupled with the failure of interim governments to establish stability, has exacerbated the crisis. The lack of effective governance has made it difficult for the international community to assist in meaningful ways. Haiti needs a comprehensive political solution, one that includes dialogue and the formation of a legitimate, inclusive government that reflects the will of the people.
3. Economic Collapse
Haiti’s economy is in freefall. Inflation is at a record high, the national currency is rapidly losing value, and access to basic necessities is becoming increasingly scarce. The country is on the brink of economic collapse, with businesses shuttering and unemployment soaring. Without international support, Haiti's ability to recover and rebuild is at serious risk.
4. Global Responsibility and Action
The international community cannot stand by as Haiti descends further into chaos. Countries and organizations with the means and responsibility to act must step up. We call for:
Increased Humanitarian Aid: Immediate and sustained humanitarian assistance, including food, water, medical supplies, and financial support for relief efforts.
International Peacekeeping Support: A multinational peacekeeping force to restore order and protect civilians from gang violence, allowing for humanitarian access and the re-establishment of basic governance.
Support for Democratic Governance: Strong support for the creation of a transparent, inclusive, and democratically elected government, ensuring the voice of the Haitian people is heard and respected.
Economic Assistance: Debt relief and economic aid packages to help stabilize Haiti's economy, facilitate recovery, and create job opportunities for its citizens.
Regional Cooperation: Regional partnerships, particularly from neighboring Caribbean nations, to coordinate efforts in rebuilding Haiti and providing long-term stability.
5. Why Haiti Deserves Our Support
Haiti’s people are resilient, but they can no longer bear the weight of this crisis alone. The country is home to over 11 million individuals who have endured centuries of exploitation and oppression, but who continue to show incredible strength in the face of adversity. Haiti deserves the same opportunity to thrive and prosper as any other nation. However, this requires urgent intervention from the global community—one rooted in solidarity, compassion, and a commitment to human dignity.
6. Call to Action
Haiti’s future is at a tipping point. The international community has a responsibility to act now, not only for Haiti’s survival but for its future. We ask world leaders to take immediate, coordinated action to end the suffering, support the Haitian people, and help pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.
Sign this petition to demand that the world stand with Haiti.
Sincerely
The Haitian People
