Thailand Climbing Development Association (TCDA) and the local climbing community in Chiang Mai urgently need your help to sign this petition to support our submission of the following letter asking to reopen Crazy Horse Buttress for climbing and outdoor activities. The letter will be formally delivered to the Board of Tourism and the governor of Chiang Mai. Every signature added to this petition will demonstrate the importance of climbing and how many people are affected by the closure of the crag. Petition to Reopen Crazy Horse Buttress for Climbing and Outdoor Activities

To: Governor of Chiang Mai,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request the immediate reopening of official access to Crazy Horse Buttress, a premier climbing and outdoor recreation destination in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This petition aims to highlight the significant negative impacts caused by the closure of this world-class area on the local community, tourism, and the broader outdoor recreation community.

Background
Crazy Horse Buttress has been a major climbing and caving destination in Thailand, attracting thousands of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts to Chiang Mai each year since 2001. Beginning July 2018, Crazy Horse Buttress has experienced intermittent closures, severely affecting the local economy and the international climbing community. The closure in July 2018 created a significant negative impact on local residents who depend on climbers for their livelihoods, including guesthouse operators, restaurant owners, and other service providers. Climbers, both local and international, also faced considerable hardship as they were denied access to one of the world's top rock climbing destinations.

In September 2022, after extensive efforts by local climbers, businesses, and officials, the area was reopened, bringing hope and economic relief to many. However, recent prohibitive signs have once again restricted access to this crucial site, reviving the challenges faced by the local community and climbers.

Impact on Local Communities and Tourism
The repeated closures of Crazy Horse Buttress have tarnished Chiang Mai's reputation as a rock climbing and outdoor hub in Thailand. The uncertainty surrounding access has led climbers and outdoor enthusiasts to choose alternative destinations, resulting in a decline in tourism. This decline has severely impacted local villagers who rely on tourism for their income, including guesthouse owners, restaurant operators, and other service providers. Local businesses, guide services, and the outdoor recreation community have also suffered significantly.

Crazy Horse Buttress has been an international model for the sustainable development of natural resources, supporting rock climbing, caving, and technical rope rescue. The area holds immense potential to be developed as a regional training center for these activities, further promoting sustainable outdoor recreation and tourism in Chiang Mai.

Our Request
We urge the Governor of the Province of Chiang Mai to:

• Reopen official access to Crazy Horse Buttress immediately.
  Establish a clear and sustainable management plan to ensure the site remains accessible for climbing, caving, and other outdoor activities well into the future.
• Collaborate with local climbers, businesses, and officials to promote sustainable tourism and community engagement.
  Recognize and support Crazy Horse Buttress as a model for sustainable outdoor recreation in Thailand.
• By reopening Crazy Horse Buttress, we can restore Chiang Mai's status as a premier climbing destination in Thailand, stimulate the local economy, and provide sustainable opportunities for outdoor recreation and tourism.

• ร่วมมือกับนักปีนเขาท้องถิ่น กลุ่มธุรกิจ และเจ้าหน้าที่ในการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวอย่างยั่งยืนและการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชน
• ยอมรับและสนับสนุน Crazy Horse Buttress ในฐานะแบบอย่างสำหรับการท่องเที่ยวและกิจกรรมกลางแจ้งอย่างยั่งยืนในประเทศไทย ด้วยการเปิด Crazy Horse Buttress อีกครั้ง เราสามารถฟื้นฟูสถานะของเชียงใหม่ในฐานะจุดหมายปลายทางการปีนเขาชั้นนำในประเทศไทย กระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจท้องถิ่น และสร้างโอกาสที่ยั่งยืนสำหรับการท่องเที่ยวและกิจกรรมกลางแจ้ง
