Planet Ice Gillingham is a vital facility for local hockey teams, figure skaters, and the wider community who rely on it for training, recreation, and sport. However, the current state of the rink has become unacceptable, especially during the summer months.

Ice sessions are frequently cancelled due to dangerously poor ice conditions. This is caused by underlying problems with the refrigeration system: the pipes that freeze the ice are blocked, leading to large trenches in the surface and dangerously thin ice in some areas. In fact, the ice has worn down so much that the concrete below is visible in places. On warmer days, the rink struggles to stay cool, and water pools on the surface, creating a reflective layer that makes skating unsafe.

This is not only frustrating for those who use the rink but also presents serious safety hazards. It threatens the growth of local sport and discourages participation at all levels.

It’s important to recognise the hard work and dedication of the rink staff, who consistently go above and beyond to manage the difficult ice conditions. From frequent resurfacing to adjusting schedules and prioritising safety, their commitment is clear. However, they’re working against significant limitations. The rink suffers from outdated and inadequate infrastructure - including blocked refrigeration pipes, a failing cooling system, and poor insulation throughout the building. These issues make it nearly impossible to maintain stable ice, especially during warmer months. With heat leaking in and the cooling systems struggling to cope, the staff can only do so much. A full refurbishment is urgently needed to support their efforts and bring the rink up to a standard the community deserves.

We are calling for immediate refurbishment and investment in the facility to ensure a safe, consistent, and professional standard of ice that meets the needs of the community. With proper maintenance and updated infrastructure, Planet Ice Gillingham can once again become a reliable, high-quality venue for all skaters.
