Petition to reduce plastic production and distribution

The Issue

Hello, I am a teen who lives in San Francisco, California. I am extremely privileged to live in such a beautiful place. However, I am also very worried about climate change. Everyday I see many pieces of plastic on the ground. Coca-cola bottles, Kit-kat wrappers, and chips bags. I know that in nearly every corner of the world it is the same, even worse. In the Philippines, whole beaches are littered in feet of plastic. Even with new inventions to recycle plastic, there is simply too much waste to responsibly recycle; in fact, Coca-cola alone makes more than 3 MILLION metric tons of plastic each year. In light of this issue, I have decided to create a “tax bracket” for plastic companies to reduce their waste. Take a look at the bracket below:

The way it works is that companies report their production to a board of people who do their “taxes” based on their gross production of plastic, measured in metric tonnes. The total amount in the “Tax amt.” section is the amount that the company has to convert to bulk distribution. That means that the company must use a giant container to ship products to stores e.g. a large metal box full of Lays chips. In conjunction, grocery stores will install ways to distribute products e.g. the Kellogg cereal thingy that you twist to get out cereal. Customers may buy containers to store those products in store or bring them from home. These changes may be made in stores of each company's choosing.

The benefits for going along with this system are that the company will receive the rights to use the Blue Whale Stamp, a symbol of wanting the environment to be more beautiful and balanced, on their products to enhance sales. Additionally, the companies that do an excellent job will receive a 1.7% tax break on revenue generated.

While these changes may be drastic for some, they are necessary to ensure that the earth can withstand the effects of climate change as a result of using fossil fuels and plastics. If this law gets passed, animals, especially marine animals like the majestic blue whale will be able to live better lives. Thank you for reading my petition and I hope you sign.
