Persepolis is an architectural masterpiece and a testament to the ingenuity of ancient Persian civilization. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as an irreplaceable treasury of human history. However, this symbol of our shared heritage is under imminent threat.

Persepolis's protected Grade-2 buffer zone is under immediate threat of municipal rezoning. We call on @UNESCO and @ICOMOS to protect this shared World Heritage site under the 1972 World Heritage Convention. 🏛️

The local municipality of Marvdasht proposes to annex approximately 160 hectares of Persepolis’ Grade-2 Buffer Zone into urban expansion boundaries. This would result in significant changes to the surrounding landscape, potentially causing irreversible harm to this precious site.

This proposal flies in the face of international treaties and UNESCO's mandate to preserve monuments of exceptional human value and legacy. The encroachment into Persepolis' protective buffer zone not only risks physical damage but undermines our cultural identity and shared history.

We are urging UNESCO and ICOMOS to intervene swiftly. It is imperative that they enforce international heritage protection regimes and halt any administrative or physical rezoning. We must preserve this site for future generations to come, maintaining its integrity and contribution to world history.
