Petition to Oppose the Construction of an LDS Temple in Carbon County

Petition to Oppose the Construction of an LDS Temple in Carbon County
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Carbon County and the City of Price, respectfully submit this petition to express our collective opposition to the proposed construction of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) temple within our community.
Reasons for Opposition:
- Community Impact: The construction of such a large religious structure may significantly alter the character of our community. Similar concerns have been raised in other areas, such as the petitions against LDS temple constructions in Tooele Valley, UT, and Bentonville, AR, where residents expressed fears of losing their community's unique identity.
- Light Pollution: The near-24/7 light illumination from an LDS Temple will significantly contribute to light pollution, undermining the integrity of Carbon County's cherished dark sky community and diminishing the efforts of the Carbon Corridor members who take pride in maintaining our exceptional night sky visibility.
- Resource Allocation: The proposed temple may lead to an increased strain on our local resources, including water, traffic, and public services. In Tooele Valley, UT, residents also highlighted the potential strain on local infrastructure as a key issue in their petitions.
- Economic Concerns: There may be concerns regarding the economic impact on local businesses and property values. In Bentonville, AR, individuals worried about the effect on local property values and the potential displacement of local businesses.
- Economic Impact on Local Businesses: Travelling visitors to the proposed LDS Temple are unlikely to contribute significantly to the local economy. The temple's location is primarily near fast food franchises, rather than the historic main street where many of our beloved local diners and shops are located. This means that visitors may bypass our unique local businesses, thereby depriving them of potential revenue and undermining the economic vitality of our community.
- Socioeconomic Impact: Carbon County is a high-poverty area, and the construction of a large religious edifice could exacerbate existing socioeconomic challenges. Increased traffic and accelerated road deterioration are just a few of the potential negative consequences that could further strain our already limited resources.
- Environmental Impact: The construction process and subsequent usage of the temple may have negative effects on the local environment. Environmental concerns were also prominent in the petitions against the temple in Tooele Valley, where residents worried about water usage and land disruption.
- Cultural Sensitivity: We believe that the introduction of a new religious edifice could disrupt the cultural balance and harmony of our diverse community. In both Tooele Valley and Bentonville, concerns about maintaining cultural heritage and community cohesion were significant points raised by petitioners.
We believe that the construction of an LDS temple in Price does not align with the best interests of our community. We urge the County of Carbon and the City of Price to reconsider and ultimately reject this proposal.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
