Dear Friends,

There has been a DEVASTATING turn of events with the landmarking of St. Adalbert's and we need your HELP!

MUST ACT NOW! DEADLINE IS 8 am, Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Last year, the Landmark Commission voted unanimously to landmark the entire St. Adalbert site which includes the church, rectory, convent and school. St. Adalbert's is poised to automatically landmark on June 23rd in just 1 week!

However, we have just learned that there is a behind-the-scenes scheme to remove all of the buildings out of landmarking and only landmark the church. While I understand that this is critically important and everything centers around the church, such a revision will open the door for the demolition of the rectory and convent which is what the current, potential buyer wants. As part of this deal, the school building would be donated to the City of Chicago. We all know that the church cannot survive on its own and it needs the benefit of these buildings to sustain it.

The potential buyer, People Church, is a non-denominational church and they have no use for the rectory or convent. We are in communication with People Church. I cannot comment further about this at this time.

This Tuesday at 10 a.m., this revised proposal will be voted on in this Zoning Committee meeting. Please attend if you can. At the very least:

WE NEED EVERYONE TO SEND AN EMAIL FOR "PUBLIC COMMENT"! Written public comment will be accepted until 8 am, Tuesday, 6/17/25.

Subject: Support Full Landmark Designation for St. Adalbert Parish Complex

Dear Members of the Zoning Committee,

I strongly urge you to support the full landmark designation for the ENTIRE St. Adalbert complex, including the church, rectory, convent, and school, at your June 17, 2025, meeting. This historic site, founded in 1874, stands as a testament to the achievements of IMMIGRANTS who built St. Adalbert brick by brick, pouring their faith, labor, and dreams into creating a lasting legacy.

Excluding the rectory, convent, or school from landmark status risks demolition and erodes the site’s historical integrity. Chicago, a city with deep Catholic roots, stands to benefit from Catholic tourism, and St. Adalbert’s full preservation can serve as a beacon for visitors and locals alike. Please vote to protect the entire St. Adalbert campus as a Chicago landmark, as set to automatically occur on June 23, 2025, and reject any efforts to limit this designation to only the church.

VOTE TO DEFER THIS SUBSTITUTE ORDINANCE!!! ALLOW THE ENTIRE ST ADALBERT SITE TO BE LANDMARKED!
