Petition to Install a Protected Green Left-Turn Arrow at State Road A1A & TPC Boulevard
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents, commuters, and visitors of Ponte Vedra Beach, respectfully request that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) conduct a traffic safety evaluation and consider installing a protected green left-turn arrow at the intersection of State Road A1A and TPC Boulevard in St. Johns County, Florida.
This intersection serves as a major access point for residential communities, local businesses, and regional destinations and experiences high traffic volumes, particularly during peak commuting hours, weekends, and special events. Currently, left-turning vehicles must rely on a yellow yield condition, which often results in congestion, driver hesitation, unsafe turning attempts, and near-miss incidents due to limited gaps in opposing traffic.
As a state-maintained roadway, State Road A1A carries a mix of local, regional, and tourist traffic, including drivers who may be unfamiliar with the intersection. A protected green left-turn arrow would provide clearer guidance and significantly improve safety and efficiency at this location.
Installing a protected left-turn signal would:
Reduce the risk of angle and rear-end collisions
Improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and backups
Increase safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists
Provide clearer signal expectations for unfamiliar or out-of-area drivers
Improve operations during peak and event-related traffic conditions
Many FDOT-managed intersections with similar traffic patterns have implemented protected left-turn phasing with positive safety outcomes. We respectfully request that FDOT District 2 prioritize this intersection for review and implement a protected green left-turn arrow if supported by traffic engineering standards and safety analysis.
Thank you for your consideration and continued commitment to roadway safety in Northeast Florida.
