SEA Recall Update: Members Request Transparency on Newly Adopted Recall Procedures

Seattle Education Association
On August 24, 2026, SEA members formally submitted a petition seeking the recall of President Ibijoke Idowu.
Following its signature verification process, SEA leadership declared the recall process complete and stated that no additional steps would be taken.
We have since been informed that “the SEA Board…did adopt procedures for a recall procedure to guide any future recall efforts within SEA.”
This raises important questions about when those procedures were adopted, why petition organizers were not informed of them before the petition was evaluated, and why the procedures have not been made publicly accessible to members.
Today, petition organizers formally requested clarification from the SEA Board of Directors, including the date of adoption, the complete procedures, relevant Board records, the verification standards applied to our petition, and any available process for reviewing disputed signatures.
We also seek clarification regarding reported statements about how the current Board would handle recall efforts.
These questions concern more than one petition. They concern every SEA member's ability to understand and exercise their rights under our union's governing documents.
We will share the Board's substantive response with members when it becomes available.
SEA members deserve clear rules, consistent procedures, and transparent decision-making.
Our union. Our rights. Our responsibility to ask questions.
