SEA Recall Update: Who Is Protecting the Membership?

Substantiated Findings, Employment Status, and Unanswered Questions
The June 17, 2026, Seattle Public Schools investigation report included substantiated findings concerning the treatment of students with disabilities. These findings are not merely rumors or uninvestigated allegations.
We also received FOIA-released information that SPS issued a discharge notice identifying the end of October 2026 as Idowu's employment termination date.
At the same time, members report that Idowu continues to tell members she retains employment status with the district. Also, more families are reportedly coming forward with serious allegations concerning Ibijoke Idowu's treatment of children at Rising Star Elementary. Families have shared accounts of a child being kicked and bruised and a laptop being thrown at another child. These new allegations, separate from the findings previously substantiated by Seattle Public Schools, warrant new, independent investigation. This information highlights the importance of transparency and accountability.
SEA and WEA should explain these conflicting accounts. Members deserve clear answers about our elected officer's employment status, the findings of the substantiated investigation, and how any change in employment or membership status affects eligibility to remain in elected union office.
On October 7, WEA representative Mary Howes informed petition organizers:
“This recall process is complete, and no additional steps will be taken.”
That declaration leaves important questions unresolved, including the disputed signature verification and members' requests for a fair recall process under SEA Bylaw § 3.5.1b.
