Petition to Form A Digital Platform Steering Committee on Behalf of Artists & Stakeholders

Petition to Form A Digital Platform Steering Committee on Behalf of Artists & Stakeholders
The Issue
In light of Chelsea Cutler’s widely shared Instagram post and the many conversations that have ensued in recent days, we are writing this petition requesting to form a Steering Committee with the goal of safeguarding the headspace and protecting the integrity of our artistic community within the digital landscape.
We believe at the moment, the demand for constant social attention, which is backed up by support from the DSP’s (Digital Streaming Platforms), has put unsustainable pressure on many artists and over time has led to a breakdown in mental health, productivity and creativity.
We are asking all sides of the music industry to sign if you have been effected by, or agree with any of the items raised in these statements - to support the formation of an independent committee focused on maintaining a public and open dialogue with the artistic community, to govern best practices and standards with the focus of championing mental health and creative integrity within the music industry. We propose that this group will meet twice-annually and consist of representatives from DSP’s, Social Media Platforms, Artists, Managers and repertoire owners. The goal will be to address problems faced by the wider artist community and lobby for actionable solutions to these issues. Action points will be drawn up and stakeholders will be held publicly accountable to share progress at future meetings.
We will invite the below stakeholders to take part given their relevance to these establishing issues:
- Artists
- Managers
- Producers
- Songwriters
- Rights Holders
- Record Labels
- Music Publishers
- Digital Streaming Platforms
- Apple Music
- Amazon Music
- Deezer
- Pandora
- Spotify
- Tidal
- YouTube
- Social Media Companies
- Facebook/Instagram
- TikTok
Upon formation, we wish begin the conversation by putting forward the following topics:
- How can Social Media Platforms and DSP’s adjust their best practices to ensure artists have a healthy balance of priorities?
- By healthy balance, we mean one that affords them the headspace for on-platform promotion and all other facets of what makes a great artist - including but not limited to - songwriting, creative/artistic expression, live touring and all other off-platform marketing/promotion.
- Artists invest a huge amount of time building their fanbases brick by brick - what are DSP’s and Social Media Platforms doing to prioritize and ensure content created is being delivered to their intended audience?
- How can we champion artistic integrity (above all else) on all platforms given that all artists approach their digital presence differently?
Please use the comments section below where we would welcome your thoughts on the issues currently raised and on the formation of the committee itself. We will keep all signatories updated on how their voices can be heard by all that need to be held accountable.
Sincerely,
Jake Posner - Music Manager, A&R and Entrepreneur
Tom Rose - Music Manager, Label Owner and Entrepreneur
