Folks,

We have reached 119 signatures, so (excluding myself) there are 118 new UK residents who have learned the truth about how dark our night skies really get and about how far south this "twilight" phenomenon really extends.

Most people associate all-night twilight with "White Nights" at relatively high latitudes just south of the Arctic Circle like 60 degrees North, when in reality, mid-latitudes such as 49 degrees North experience the exact same phenomenon albeit with a "darker" sky.

In fact, 45 degrees North is the exact halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole, this means that there are only 3.5 degrees between the halfway mark and the lowest latitude in which astronomical twilight lasts all night, meaning that nearly EVERY latitude closer to the North Pole than the Equator experiences at least one night per year where it does not get completely dark (only locations closer to the North Pole than the Equator in the narrow range between 45 North and 48.5 North completely miss this phenomenon).

I have included an image of a sun chart for Derby, England for June 2026 to show you that although it seems counterintuitive that "twilight" lasts all night in Derby, it is 100% scientifically and factually true.

I aim to reach a modest milestone of 200 signatures by the end of the year and next June, stay up late and pay attention to the sky on a clear night!
