Greetings from the Glen Eira Emergency Climate Action Network,

Thank you for signing the petition to urge Glen Eira Council to declare a climate emergency.  Here is a quick, but important update for you about the campaign: now is the critical time for us to use our influence. We are asking you to contact Glen Eira Councillors to show the strength of community support for a climate emergency declaration, before 28 April as they will make their decision on this day. It is easy, we have provided you with a single-click option below.

We have collected over five-hundred signatures and will be delivering the petition to the Council on Monday.

Council meets on Tuesday 28 April 2020 to discuss the topic of declaring a climate emergency.

Here's where you come in: we are asking you to call and email our Councillors to make sure they know how important declaring a climate emergency is to you. If you would like an easy way to send an email to all nine Councillors, please click the link below (see the Mailchimp link waaay down at the bottom of this message) and it will open up an email addressed to them with a brief message indicating your support for a climate emergency declaration. Feel free to make any changes you like, and please remember to insert your name and address where indicated.

If you would prefer to contact them individually, their contact details are provided below. Here are a few tips for your calls and emails: let the Councillors know that you think making a Climate and Ecological Emergency declaration IS important and WHY it is important to YOU. You might also like to suggest some ways to reduce emissions. It doesn't have to be a long message, a few sentences will do just fine. But if you're inspired to write at length, please do.  While you're at it, please send this email your friends, family and neighbours who live in Glen Eira.

Things you might want to include in your message:

  • It is important for the Council to declare a Climate Emergency.
  • Incremental action will not be rapid enough to enact the change required to avert the worst of the consequences.
  • Our science says that a business as usual approach is leading us towards catastrophic consequences.
  • Why the Council declaring a Climate Emergency is important to YOU - you might want to write about your concerns for your future or generations to come, wildlife, oceans, health impacts of climate change, extreme heat and weather events, the economy, your favourite seaside holiday location, people who are indigenous, refugees or whose homes are being lost to rising sea levels.
  • That it is important for all levels of Government to declare a climate emergency.
  • The more local Councils that declare an emergency put pressure on state and federal governments to also declare.

We want to make sure that the Councillors receive lots of calls and emails so it is loud and clear that the Glen Eira community want a Climate Emergency Declaration. We want this outcome because at the meeting on 28 April, the council will also consider two alternative positions: 'Incremental Action on Climate, but without an Emergency Declaration' or 'Business As Usual'. Neither of those two positions adequately address our present and future climate emergency.

If you are interested, you can attend the 28 April Council meeting online, using this link: http://webcast.gleneira.vic.gov.au. It starts at 7:30pm. See the Council website for more information.

Yours, in action for a safer climate,
Belinda, Bruce, Ingrid, Mark, David, Mary, Rose, Sue, David, Sally, Jay, Felicity, Asher, David, Brett, Stuart, Graham, Paul, Adam and Rick,
on behalf of The Glen Eira Emergency Climate Action Network
