Petition to Allow Music During Afternoon Pickup at Central School
The Issue
To: Melissa Cruz-Gomez and Ilene Zucker, Principal and Vice-Principal at Central School
We, the undersigned members of the Central School PTA, parents and guardians of Central School students, and Central School teachers and aides, respectfully request that music be permitted during afternoon pickup, from 2:40 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. on school days.
Pickup is a daily point of connection for our school community. Families, caregivers, and staff come together at the end of each day, and we believe music would make that time more welcoming and upbeat for students and adults. Students would end each school day on a positive note, and the wait would feel friendlier for families and caregivers.
To make sure music supports a safe and orderly dismissal, we propose the following:
- Moderate volume: Music will stay at a background level so that staff instructions, announcements, and conversations can be heard clearly, and so that neighbors are not disturbed.
- Staff control: Staff on duty may lower or stop the music at any time, including for safety, weather, or announcements.
- Defined window: Music will play only from 2:40 to 3:10 p.m. on school days.
Trial period. We suggest a 4-week trial, followed by a review with administration and staff.
We appreciate your consideration and welcome the chance to work with you on the details.
