Petition updatePetition to Address Unfair Rent Hikes and Price Gouging by Property ManagersIn a Falling Market, How Can We Justify Such a Huge Rent Increase?

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify massive rent increases, especially when the market is falling. How can we look at families already struggling to make ends meet and say, “Here’s a $160 per week increase—good luck”?

The truth is, many families are barely holding on as it is, and for some, this kind of hike could push them out of their homes. This situation is heartbreaking and completely unjust in a society that claims to value fairness and support for those who need it most.

Yes, costs do rise, and landlords have their own expenses to cover. But when we’re talking about a rent increase in a falling market—where demand is cooling and property prices are dropping—this kind of increase is absolutely unjustifiable. Families are already facing financial strain, and this puts them at even greater risk.

Rent should reflect the market and the value provided by the property—not be used as a quick way to boost profits at the expense of vulnerable families. The real impact of these hikes is devastating. Families are being pushed out of homes, lives are being upended, and people are struggling to survive.

Landlords, please remember: Housing is a basic need. You don’t need to price people out just to make more money. There is a better way—one that doesn’t sacrifice the well-being of entire families for a quick financial gain.

Let’s work together to protect our communities, uphold fairness, and ensure that every family has access to a stable, affordable home.
