Petition the Iowa DOT to improve Highway 61 safety measures

Petition the Iowa DOT to improve Highway 61 safety measures
The Issue
Living in a rural area brings a sense of community and peace, but for the residents between the I-280 bridge and Blue Grass area of Highway 61, this peace is constantly disrupted by the heavy commuter traffic. This area is more than just a pass-through for many; it is home. But every day, our friends, families, and neighbors are forced to navigate dangerous driving conditions just to get to their own driveways.
The frequent and persistent issues we face include speeding violations that go unchecked, reckless tailgating, and regular occurrences of drivers cutting others off. These behaviors create not just stress, but severe safety hazards for the local community. The lack of safe entry and exit points onto Highway 61 significantly increases the risk for accidents, leaving residents with no choice but to practice defensive driving at all times.
The Iowa Department of Transportation has an obligation to ensure our roads are safe for everyone, not just those passing through. Implementing stronger speed enforcement measures is a necessary step in this. Additionally, re-evaluating and redesigning access points for residents can greatly reduce the risk of accidents and improve traffic flow for everyone involved.
Statistical data from several road safety studies throughout this region indicate a higher-than-average accident rate, underscoring the dire need for intervention. By putting effective safety measures in place, we can not only protect the local residents but also improve the commuting experience for drivers throughout the state.
We call upon the Iowa DOT to address these issues urgently, fostering a safer environment for everyone who travels on Highway 61. Please sign this petition to demand immediate action to make necessary improvements to our roads before further incidents occur.
