Petition Sainsbury's to change their parking restrictions. One hour is not enough.

The Issue

Surbiton, once a friendly and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike, has recently experienced a significant setback, all due to the new parking policy implemented by Sainsbury's Surbiton. The recent change in parking policy, allowing visitors only a maximum of one hour, is immensely prohibitive and, frankly, unfriendly.

As a local business owner, this policy not only impacts my livelihood but also the charm and bustle that Surbiton's independent shops and enterprises bring to our community. Visitors who once had the flexibility to spend leisurely afternoons exploring and supporting local businesses now find themselves in a rush, constantly checking the clock rather than enjoying their time and boosting the local economy.

According to a study by the British Retail Consortium, relaxed parking policies can increase footfall by up to 30%, and the current policy stands in stark contrast to such beneficial frameworks. The ambiance and economic health of Surbiton are at stake, and it is crucial that we take action to revert this short-sighted decision.

What we are asking for is simple: revert to two-hours parking with a minimum shop at Sainsbury's and allow visitors the option to pay for additional parking time beyond the one-hour limit. The previous limit of three hours will restore the balance that once allowed our local businesses to thrive alongside national chains and encourage a diverse array of visitors to return and enjoy all that Surbiton has to offer.

Join us in urging Sainsbury's Surbiton to reassess their parking policy. Sign the petition and help us bring back a vibrant, inclusive Surbiton where businesses can prosper and visitors can enjoy their time without unnecessary constraints.

PS. Wonderful response to this petition. Will keep putting pressure on Sainsbury's and Euro Car Parks. Some establishments can still offer their customers/members the 2 hours free parking which I think is very undemocratic! Please do post a comment. This will be really useful when it comes to my letter/phone calls and emails to Sainsbury's Head Office. It has been very muddy/clouded as to who has instigated the changes... and info regarding who owns the lease to the car park has changed in the last 2 weeks.. keep sharing, thank you for new signatures. More soon! Maya
