Petition on Walkability to Pierrefonds-Roxboro Mayor Dimitrios Jim Beis

The Issue

Dear Mayor Beis,

Climate change is a critical issue affecting our world, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions should be a priority for our community. In 2022, Canada emitted approximately 708 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent—an increase of 1.3% from 2021 and 16.5% from 1990 (Natural Resources Canada, 2023).  43% of our emissions in Quebec come from transportation*, so one effective way to reduce emissions is by decreasing car use, which requires making our town more walkable.

A key barrier to walkability in our community is inadequate snow removal. Many neighborhoods do not receive regular street and sidewalk clearing, making it difficult—if not unsafe—for residents to walk, particularly seniors and individuals with mobility challenges. As a result, many are forced to drive or take taxis, even for short trips. By improving snow clearing and sanding efforts, we can make walking a safer, more viable option year-round. This would not only reduce traffic congestion and emissions but also enhance public safety and community well-being.

We, the undersigned residents of the town of Pierrefonds-Roxboro call upon you to consider increasing the frequency and coverage of snow removal and sanding in our town. Investing in walkability is an investment in both our environment and our residents' quality of life. Thank you for your time and leadership on this important issue.
