We, the undersigned residents of Lusaka, call for immediate action to address the gross inconsistencies, unfair distribution of power, and lack of transparency in the current loadshedding schedule.

While we understand the necessity of loadshedding due to energy supply constraints, the implementation must be fair, transparent, and consistent.

Background

In recent weeks, numerous neighborhoods in Lusaka have experienced severe and prolonged power outages that far exceed the scheduled 12-hour loadshedding periods. Some areas are subjected to blackouts lasting up to 22 hours, while nearby neighborhoods enjoy uninterrupted power for several days. This discrepancy is not only unreasonable, unequal, and unjust, it also severely disrupts daily life, hampers economic activities, and affects the wellbeing of all residents.

Issues Raised

Discrepancies in Power Distribution:

• Certain neighborhoods endure up to 22 hours of loadshedding, whereas others have continuous power for days, even if they're the same group schedule (e.g. Group C, D, E).
• This inconsistent distribution is unacceptable and unfair.

Economic and Social Impact:

• Extended outages significantly impact small businesses, leading to loss of income, increased operational costs, and spoiled goods.
• Daily life is disrupted, causing stress, anxiety, and reducing the quality of life for residents.
