I am compelled to speak out about what I view as Representative Tom Emmer’s unacceptable and harmful representation of Minnesota. His public praise of ICE agents’ recent conduct is, in my view, deeply troubling and incompatible with the values of safety, dignity, and constitutional rights that Minnesotans expect from their elected officials.

The actions carried out by ICE agents; firing rubber bullets into protest lines, deploying chemical agents, and launching tear‑gas canisters at peaceful demonstrators—are, to me, unnecessary, excessive, and an abuse of power. These tactics should not be celebrated as patriotic or justified as “good faith” enforcement. Instead, they represent a dangerous escalation that appears designed to provoke reactions from peaceful protesters and activists. Such escalation risks creating a pretext for further federal intervention and force, contrary to the will and wellbeing of the public.

This issue is not abstract for me. My cousin and her wife were among those targeted—soaked with chemical agents and struck with rubber bullets; while standing in a designated protest area, participating in a non‑violent demonstration fully protected by the First Amendment rights to free speech and peaceful assembly. Their experience reflects a broader pattern of intimidation and force that I believe has no place in a democratic society.

The broader political environment surrounding these events, including the rhetoric and actions of the current administration and its most fervent supporters, raises serious concerns about the normalization of violence as a tool of governance. This is not the America we are meant to be. Our nation’s strength has always come from its commitment to civil liberties, democratic norms, and the protection of dissent—not from the suppression of it.

For these reasons, I find Representative Emmer’s praise of these actions and his alignment with this approach to governance to be profoundly disturbing and wholly unrepresentative of the Minnesota I know and love.

This failure to represent all constituents violates the fundamental expectation that elected officials serve the entire population of their district, not only those who share their political views.

2. Support for Harmful and Abusive Federal Actions Against Minnesotans

Representative Emmer has publicly supported federal actions carried out by DHS and ICE that many Minnesotans view as harmful, abusive, or unlawful. These actions have included aggressive enforcement tactics and questionable contacts with both citizens and undocumented individuals. His support for these measures aligns with a broader federal campaign that many residents believe is driven by political retaliation rather than legitimate public safety concerns. Such support undermines the safety, dignity, and rights of Minnesotans.

3. Misuse of Office to Advance Partisan Retaliation

Representative Emmer’s alignment with efforts described by many as politically motivated, including actions associated with former President Trump’s rhetoric and agenda, raises serious concerns about his commitment to democratic norms and the well‑being of Minnesota. His public positions have contributed to an atmosphere of division, hostility, and fear, rather than constructive leadership.

4. Baseless Attacks on Minnesota Leadership

Representative Emmer’s call for the resignation of Governor Tim Walz, despite the governor’s efforts to support Minnesota’s interests, reflects a pattern of partisan escalation rather than responsible governance. These attacks lack substantive merit and appear intended to inflame political tensions rather than address the real needs of Minnesotans.

5. History of Election Denial and Support for Abusive Uses of Power

Representative Emmer has aligned himself with election denial narratives and has supported individuals and actions that many Minnesotans view as abuses of power. These positions have contributed to the erosion of public trust in democratic institutions and have damaged Minnesota’s reputation as a state committed to fairness, integrity, and constitutional principles.

6. Damage to Minnesota’s Standing and America’s Global Reputation

Through his support of extreme political factions and international actions widely criticized as harmful to America’s credibility, Representative Emmer has failed to uphold the responsibility of a federal representative to protect the long‑term interests of both Minnesota and the nation. His conduct has contributed to the weakening of America’s standing on the world stage.
