Petition for the Implementation of a Composting Program in Underserved Areas of Montreal

The Issue

Petition to Mayor Valérie Plante

WHEREAS climate change poses a grave threat to our community, immediate action is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate its effects.

WE, the undersigned citizens of Montreal, call upon Mayor Valérie Plante to take concrete measures toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions by implementing a composting program in areas of Montreal currently lacking such facilities.

We urge Mayor Valérie Plante to collaborate with local businesses and community organizations to provide residents in underserved areas with convenient access to composting facilities, and develop education and outreach programs on the benefits of composting. Drawing inspiration from South Korea's successful food waste reduction policy, we recommend implementing a system in Montreal that charges households for waste disposal based on the weight of their food waste. This approach would incentivize residents to compost their organic waste, as it would directly impact their waste disposal fees, encouraging sustainable waste management practices and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

To address the urgency of climate change and work towards a more sustainable and resilient future, we call upon Mayor Valérie Plante to take immediate action by implementing a composting program in parts of Montreal where it is currently unavailable and prioritizing underserved areas.

Sincerely, Samuel Cloutier Vardon
