On the 19th of December, 2025, a Bangladeshi Hindu citizen, Dipu Chandra Das was surrounded by a mob of hundreds over an alleged charge of ‘blasphemy’, was beaten mercilessly, stripped naked, tied to a tree and burnt alive. This is not an isolated event. It is part of the growing pattern of atrocities committed against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly after the recent regime change in Bangladesh.
In the wake of the recent incidents of violence against religious and ethnic minorities in Bangladesh particularly Hindus, we the citizens of Ireland feel compelled to voice our grave concerns growing over these events. The minorities of Bangladesh are witnessing a series of brutalities such as mob violence, lynching, land grabbing, sexual violence, destruction of religious sites, homes and businesses. Hindus are prohibited from openly celebrating religious festivals and face forceful conversions at the hands of extremist groups. In Dipu’s case, he was quite literally handed over to the mob by the police. The entire incident was filmed, celebrated and proudly shared on social media platforms.
This incident also highlights large-scale demographic changes in Bangladesh which is home to the 3rd largest Hindu population in the world. The Hindu population of Bangladesh has declined from 13.5% in 1974 to a mere 8% in 2022.
Our Goal:
We firmly stand for minority rights and condemn the human rights violation, sectarian violence and the atrocities committed against the minorities in Bangladesh. Ireland protects minorities and upholds values that endorse the right to freedom of expression and freedom of religion, and as citizens of this country, we plead that this case of the devastating situation of minorities in Bangladesh, be taken up in the Dail. This will help raise awareness and create meaningful dialogue regarding the protection of minority rights, not only at the local level but also at the international forum.
We urge you to sign this petition to not only show solidarity with the affected families but to be a part of a larger movement against religious persecution and for the protection of minority rights worldwide. Your support can amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and could potentially save lives.
We thank you abundantly for your time and consideration for attending to our grievances and your commitment to justice and equality.
