Petition for Student Board Member on Kern County Board of Education (ONLY KCSOS STUDENTS)

Petition for Student Board Member on Kern County Board of Education (ONLY KCSOS STUDENTS)
The Issue
As the Region 8 President of the California Association of Student Councils, I am calling for a Student Board Member with preferential voting rights to be established on the Kern County Board of Education, per CA AB275 (2023), which states that a Student Board Member, with preferential voting rights, as advisory members to each trustee member, be instituted within 60 days of receiving the petition, or at the next regularly scheduled board meeting -whichever comes first.
"The petition shall contain the signatures of either (A) not less than 500 pupils regularly enrolled in high schools that are under the jurisdiction of the county board of education, or (B) not less than 10% of the number of pupils regularly enrolled in high schools that are under the jurisdiction of the county board of education, whichever is less" (AB 275, Ward). This petition hopes to get 500 signatures!
This position will be vital to implementing a student-voice, county-wide. As a member of the California Association of Student Councils, I am proud to say that our organization made this possible through our sponsored bills in the past, instituting student board members on the district level, as well as granting preferential voting rights to members.
By creating a student board member position, there would also be a student representative for each board member to advise them on topics that will be discussed by the board at meetings. This is so important to have a student voice because these are the issues that will affect us most. This would allow for a line of communication to be truly heard by those representing us.
Signatures MUST come from students attending a school in Kern County Superintendent of Schools jurisdiction.
This is NOT a partisan issue, I am just trying to get kids a voice!
In accordance with KCSOS' motto, "advocates for children," may children be able to advocate for themselves.
