Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, and Wilmington, NC, is no exception to this trend. The Cape Fear Pickleball Club and Wilmington pickleball community have seen a substantial increase in membership over recent years, demonstrating the rising interest and demand for pickleball facilities. With its easy accessibility and social nature, pickleball appeals to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, promoting healthy activity, community engagement, and recreational opportunities.
Currently, there are no public permanent pickleball courts located within the city limits of Wilmington. Wilmington pickleball players are limited to dual use tennis courts which are often overcrowded, making it challenging for players to enjoy the game and for new players to join. The approximate two acres of field area at Empie Park, located at 3405 Park Avenue, presents a unique opportunity for the city to address this issue and meet the growing demand for quality pickleball facilities.
We strongly advocate for the city's transformation of the Empie Park field area into a dedicated pickleball facility due to its exceptional potential. This location boasts ample space, pre-cleared land, a dedicated entrance off Wrightsville Ave ensuring minimal interference with tennis and park activities, and it is distanced from residential areas. Moreover, it offers abundant parking and an existing restroom facility that likely requires only cleaning and plumbing reconnection. These attributes position the Empie Park area as an ideal choice for permanent pickleball courts, catering to our community's growing interest in the sport.
We invite you to demonstrate your support by signing the petition. Your signature will contribute to the realization of a dedicated pickleball facility at Empie Park, a location with remarkable potential.
We, the undersigned, believe that the city's transformation of the Empie Park field area into a permanent pickleball facility aligns with the values of our community and the goals of promoting health, social interaction, and recreational opportunities. We kindly request the Wilmington, NC City Council's support in committing to a right of first use by a pickleball complex for this area, thereby marking a significant step toward fulfilling the pickleball needs of our growing community.
