Hello world, my name is Rita and I am from Lima, Perú. On May 23rd, 2022 I was lucky to witness the incredible play “Prima Facie” live at Harold Pinter Theater in London for the 1st time, and was able to go see it in Broadway during its successful 2023 run.
Written by Suzie Miller and performed in the most breathtaking way by the actress Jodie Comer. The play also came to cinemas “worldwide” on July 21st, 2022 through the NT live production, and I'm glad that this run got extended to many months and many major cities around the world, since it allowed many friends to be able to see Prima Facie on the big screen. Some of them were even able to see it multiple times! I was lucky that the City where I'm currently residing in the US also offered 1 showing on July 21st 2022, and I was able to bring a couple of friends along with me so they could watch it for their 1st time.
During the last few months I've been promoting this Play among my friends, family and social media, and trying to get my local cinema to add an extra screening of the NT Live version, so that I could bring a larger crowd to the movies with me, but sadly still have not been successful in getting an extra date, nor is it available for streaming via NT live portal anymore last time I checked. Also, none of my friends or family in Lima Peru and other Cities around the world have been able to see this play yet, as I checked the https://primafacie.ntlive.com site a regular basis and it still wasn't available for them, nor can be found by streaming either.
I am super thankful that this run has been experienced by many people already in a record breaking way, and that many more also had the opportunity to go live to it's Broadway run in 2023 which was amazing and so worthy of a Tony Award win for actress Jodie Comer! But sadly, Broadway wasn’t an affordable or accessible option for most. Especially not for those from the Latin American and Caribbean communities who for example needed to wait at least 1 year just to get an appointment to get a valid passport to then ask for a Visa to entry the USA. It was very sad to hear about many friends having to cancel their plans to go see the show due to having visas denied too.
Please join me in signing this petition for the “Prima Facie NT live” to be released on DVD and/or via a streaming service so that it can help bring this production to more people around the world who still haven't had access to it .
In recent years, there’s been a big increase in violence against women and girls, femicide, sexual violence and gender inequality, as women and little girls continue to be victims of violence only to end up being failed by the cultural and legal system and disbelieved, so instead, they choose to remain silent.
We nowadays seem to be living in a world where women don’t have a choice or a voice anymore, and where it feels like we are constantly being punished or accused of for example being guilty of provoking our attacker just because we were wearing a short skirt or tight jeans.
This needs to stop.
Women from all ages, ethnic backgrounds, sexual preferences have the right of making their voices heard and Tessa’s intense and emotional journey through her experience of becoming a victim herself and exposing the truth of inequality in the legal system is something that must be seen by most people across the world.
I was also moved to create this petition on the day when the news came out in the USA about the loss of women’s right to decide about their own bodies over a year ago.
“…All I know is that somewhere. Some time. Somehow. Something has to change.” I’m starting here.
(For the production to consider: Maybe a portion of the profits from the DVD could be donated to the Schools Consent Project).
