Petition for Justice for the Sexual Assault of Army Officer’s Fiancé

The Issue

To
The Honourable Authorities,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern and anger over the horrifying incident of sexual assault and misconduct involving the fiancée of an Army officer in Odisha on September 15, 2024. As per reports, five police personnel have been accused of assaulting both the Army officer and his fiancée, violating their trust, dignity, and safety.

This incident is not only a gross abuse of power by those sworn to protect but also an attack on the honor of our Armed Forces, who are held in the highest regard in Indian society. Army personnels are often the last resort in managing crises, natural disasters, and emergencies. To have a member of this honorable institution and their family subjected to such heinous behavior by the police is an insult to their service and sacrifices.

While the suspension of the accused police officers is a minimal first step, mere suspension does not amount to justice. We demand immediate termination of the involved officers from their duties and the initiation of strict legal proceedings. A suspension is a temporary administrative measure that fails to address the severity of the crime committed, and it is vital that permanent and decisive action be taken to restore public faith in law enforcement.

We therefore request the following:

1. Termination of Duties and Criminal Prosecution: The five police officers involved in this crime must be immediately terminated from their positions and face criminal prosecution under the relevant laws. Termination is the only fitting response for the misuse of authority and trust in such a grave case of sexual assault and violence.

2. Independent Investigation: A transparent and independent investigation is essential to ensure accountability. There must be no scope for leniency or bias, especially given the involvement of police personnel in this crime.

3. Comprehensive Support for the Victim: The victim must receive full support, including medical care, legal aid, and psychological counseling, to help her recover from the trauma. Protecting her dignity and ensuring her safety must be a priority.

4. Elimination of Symbolic Punishments: A suspension is a symbolic action that does not hold those guilty accountable for their crimes. Permanent termination of duties and criminal charges are necessary to ensure such actions are never repeated.

5. Police Reforms and Accountability: This incident highlights the urgent need for reforms within the police force to prevent such misuse of power. Mechanisms to address police misconduct, particularly in cases involving women, must be strengthened to restore public trust in law enforcement.

6. Restoring the Dignity of the Armed Forces: Our Armed Forces are the nation’s pride, and incidents like this tarnish the respect they deserve. Action must be swift to ensure that such disgraceful acts do not erode the honor of the Armed Forces, who stand as protectors of the nation.

We urge the Honourable Authorities to act swiftly and take concrete steps to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable through termination of their duties and subsequent legal action. Justice must be swift and fair, and the dignity of the victim and the Armed Forces must be restored.

We stand with the victim and her family, demanding justice that is transparent, timely, and uncompromising.

Sincerely,
A Not-So-Proud Army Wife
