Update on Special Education in Westport (and how to easily help)

This Thursday the District is going to recommend a consultant to be hired to conduct the review of Special Education of Westport Public Schools. The current review process still raises serious questions regarding independence, transparency, and meaningful oversight. Most importantly: Will the review address parent concerns at all?
Key Areas of Concern:
- Student safety
- Effective support that leads to meaningful academic progress
- Inclusion and access to resources
- Redirect resources wasted on legal expenses and invest in district programs and staff
- Genuine collaboration with parents
- Protection against retaliation for staff, students and parents
Without addressing the issues, costs will likely continue to skyrocket and students will likely continue to struggle.
The request to the Board of Education:
- Follow through with engaging the community in the selection of the consultant
- Focus the scope of work on the issues that prompted the review
