The Issue

To the Administration of GSMST and GCPS Board of Education:

We, the undersigned community of GSMST, hereby petition for GSMST to provide students with a minimum of 30 uninterrupted minutes for lunch, excluding transition time.

While we recognize that GSMST's rigorous schedule is vital to maintaining the school's standard of academic excellence, the recent shift in the 2026-27 bell schedule has reduced our lunch time from 24 minutes to just 20 minutes. With transition times remaining at only four minutes, students face long cafeteria lines and microwave wait times. In practice, a 20-minute block leaves students with as little as 8 to 10 minutes of actual seated eating time.

This current structure fails to meet established national public health recommendations:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explicitly recommends at least 20 minutes of actual seated eating time excluding transit and line waits, a threshold GSMST currently fails to reach.

  • Research published by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics demonstrates that students with less than 20 minutes of eating time consume significantly less of their entrées, vegetables, and milk, leading to increased food waste and inadequate daily nutrient intake.

Under these extreme time constraints, students are forced to either gulp down meals, skip eating entirely, or rely on ultra-processed, high-energy snacks simply because they can be consumed quickly. Eating in a rushed state leads to indigestion, heightened stress, and afternoon energy crashes that directly hinder focus and classroom performance. Providing at least 30 uninterrupted minutes for lunch is essential to support student health, well-being, and academic success.

To achieve a minimum 30-minute lunch period without hurting classroom instruction, we propose the following adjustments to the 2026-27 GSMST Bell Schedule:

1. For block days, trim 3 minutes from each of the three non-lunch block periods (1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 7th/8th). This reallocates 9 minutes, extending lunch from 20 to 29 minutes, while preserving over 89 minutes of class time per block.

2. For anchor days, trim 3 minutes from advisement and 1 minute from each of the 7 core academic periods. This reallocates 10 minutes, extending lunch from 20 to 30 minutes. Advisement remains fully functional for daily announcements and check-ins, while 1 minute off core classes has virtually zero impact on instructional time.
