The Issue

As a Turkish Cypriot, I often find myself frustrated by the absence of a TRNC flag emoji. In a world where emojis have become a universal language for conveying identity, emotions, and affiliations, it's disheartening that my community's identity lacks representation. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, with its rich cultural heritage and proud people, deserves to be acknowledged in this increasingly digital era.

Globally, millions of people have used and relied on flag emojis to illustrate national pride and cultural connections. These symbols are much more than mere decorative icons; they convey a sense of belonging and offer a way for individuals to express connections to their homelands. Without a TRNC flag emoji, many Turkish Cypriots feel left out of these conversations.

The Unicode Consortium, which oversees the standards for emojis, has been incredibly inclusive in representing diverse cultural and national identities over recent years. However, the TRNC is currently missing from this digital inventory. Adding a flag for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus would not only reflect the diversity and inclusivity that the digital realm champions but would also honor the distinct identity of Turkish Cypriots globally.

Creating a TRNC flag emoji is technically feasible and would serve as a significant gesture toward acknowledging and validating the Turkish Cypriot community. It stands as an opportunity to embrace diversity and enhance inclusivity in digital communication.

I call on the Unicode Consortium and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action in including the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus flag in the global emoji set. Please sign this petition to ensure our digital landscapes represent all voices, cultures, and communities fairly.
