The City Council voted no (7 - 3) to the Province's application for a temporary variance that would allow the establishment of an Overdose Prevention Site at Park St. While each Councillor's reasons for choosing to vote No varied, as a whole their concerns related to: - providing multiple services in a concentrated area and the burden to the residents of that area - increased crime and safety issues already cropping up in the area surrounding the shelter and concerns that the OPS would contribute to more crime and safety issues - the Province's complete lack of community consultation prior to applying for the temporary variance - the Province's lack of proper planning for a long-term, sustainable solution - the Province's outsourcing of the OPS operation to a third-party NGO that doesn't have any experience in managing such a facility - the Province's inaction with respect to providing the City with additional resources to manage the increasing criminal activity, needles, garbage, etc. This is just one step in the Province's larger plan to establish wraparound services at the toxic site at Park St. We will continue to demand proper community consultation, accountability, transparency, and resources at every stage going forward.
