The City Council votes on the OPS variance THIS coming Monday, Sept 25th. This petition with all signatures will be shared with Council on Monday at noon. Please share this petition and/or write your City Councillor outlining your concerns regarding this poorly-planned OPS.
This is not just a Ward 2 issue, the issues are bigger than any one area of the City. All Councillors need to know where their constituents stand on the Province's poor planning, lack of community consultation by the province, and under-resourcing the City to manage safety and cleanliness issues. Thank you!!!
LATEST UPDATE: New information indicates that in 2021 the Auditor General advised the Province that it must complete an Environmental Assessment of Park St. BEFORE proceeding with any plans for expansion on the former government garage, which is a toxic site.
The government ignored the AG and proceeded to make plans without conducting an EA. In 2023, the AG again told the Province they must complete an EA and gave them a deadline. They are now conducting that EA, whilst waiting for Council to review their variance application concurrently.
The fact is, the Park St. site is toxic and it could cost millions of $$ to clean it up. Because the government didn't do their due diligence and steamed ahead with planning for Park St. expansion, taxpayers could very well be on the hook for MANY millions of dollars - either to mitigate Park St. or to go back to the drawing board and come up with a brand new plan for wraparound services. This government needs to be held to account for poor planning, cutting corners, and its complete lack of community consultation.
