Petition for a Leash-Free Dog Park in Village Green Square

Petition for a Leash-Free Dog Park in Village Green Square
The Issue
Dear Mayor Chow, Councillor Mantas, and Mr. Laguns,
We, the undersigned residents and dog owners of Village Green Square, respectfully petition for the creation of a designated leash-free dog park in our community. The establishment of such a park would provide numerous benefits to both the local population and our beloved pets, contributing to a healthier, happier, and more engaged community.
Why a Leash-Free Dog Park is Essential for Our Community:
1. Promotes Canine Health and Wellbeing
Dogs require daily exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A leash-free park would allow dogs to run freely, interact with other dogs, and burn off excess energy in a safe and controlled environment. This would reduce common behavior problems stemming from boredom and lack of exercise.
2. Encourages Responsible Pet Ownership
A leash-free park would encourage responsible pet ownership by providing a designated space where dogs can socialize, play, and interact safely under their owner’s supervision. This can reduce the potential for conflict between off-leash dogs and people in other public areas.
3. Builds Community Engagement
Dog parks are natural gathering spots for pet owners, creating opportunities for social interactions and fostering a stronger sense of community. The park would serve as a hub for local residents to connect, share experiences, and collaborate on maintaining a healthy environment for both pets and people.
4. Improves Safety and Environmental Impact
A well-maintained, fenced, leash-free area would help contain dogs in one specific zone, ensuring they don’t roam unsupervised in other parts of the community, which can pose risks to both the animals and other residents. The park would also reduce the chance of incidents with dogs being off-leash in undesignated areas like streets and public playgrounds.
5. Enhances Property Value
Leash-free dog parks have been shown to improve property values in neighborhoods by making the area more attractive to families and dog owners. This would benefit the city as a whole by making our community more desirable and livable for all.
We Propose the Following:
- That the city allocate space within an existing park or establish a new location that is safely fenced and designed specifically for a leash-free dog park.
- The park should include basic amenities such as waste disposal stations, benches, and shaded areas to ensure the comfort and safety of both pets and their owners.
- Consideration for community involvement in the planning process, including input on location, design, and rules to ensure the park meets the needs of all residents.
We, the undersigned, believe that the establishment of a leash-free dog park in Village Green Square will significantly enhance the quality of life for both residents and their dogs.
