Petition for a Hybrid Option at Warren Wilson College

The Issue

With the current situation at Warren Wilson College, students should be given an option to attend classes online until the end of the Fall Semester.

Student's mental health should be taken into consideration when making decisions about how to carry out the fall semester. Many students are dealing with the aftereffects of the hurricane at home which could affect their ability to return to school. Having an online option can prevent people from withdrawing from the semester or worse, dropping out altogether. Providing students with this option can allow for more space to process the trauma we’ve experienced.

At this point, Asheville Water has advised that people with cuts or immunodeficiencies don't take showers in the water provided by our water systems. Additionally, they recommend that parents closely monitor small children who are taking showers to ensure they don't get water in their mouths.

Asheville Water has also stated that the water provided should not be used to wash dishes.

Given this information, it is reasonable for students to be reluctant about returning to campus. The option to continue online schooling until the end of the semester should be provided. It is understandable, however, that some students would prefer to be on campus, given that some may not have healthy home situations.

Because some students would do better online while some could do better in person, Warren Wilson should have both an online option and an in person option until the Spring Semester.
