Petition Demanding Explanation and Resolution of Intermittent Power Outage in Volta Region

Petition Demanding Explanation and Resolution of Intermittent Power Outage in Volta Region
The Issue
We the customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Volta Region, on behalf of myself and numerous affected residents, businesses, and households across various communities in the region (including but not limited to Ho, Hohoe, Kpando, Aflao, Anloga, and surrounding areas), hereby present this formal petition to express our deep concern and frustration regarding the persistent intermittent power outages and severely low current/voltage supply experienced throughout the Volta Region for the past two weeks (approximately from early January 2026 to date).
These disruptions have occurred without adequate prior notice, explanation, or timely restoration in many instances, leading to significant hardship and financial losses for the people of the Volta Region.
Key Issues Observed:
• Frequent and unpredictable power interruptions lasting from several minutes daily.
• Persistently low voltage (often below acceptable standards), causing appliances to malfunction, overheat, or fail to operate properly.
• These conditions have directly resulted in the damage or complete destruction of numerous electrical gadgets and appliances, including refrigerators, air conditioners, televisions, fans, computers, water pumps, washing machines, chargers, and other essential household and commercial equipment.
The financial burden on affected individuals and businesses is substantial, as many have incurred repair or replacement costs running into hundreds of Ghana cedis, with no immediate relief or compensation mechanism in place.
As a state-owned utility responsible for reliable electricity distribution in the region, ECG has a duty under its mandate to provide safe, stable, and uninterrupted power supply to consumers. The current situation contravenes consumers’ rights to quality service and has caused avoidable suffering.
Specific Demands: We respectfully but firmly demand the following within seven (7) days of receipt of this petition:
1. A detailed written explanation of the root causes of the intermittent outages and low voltage experienced in the Volta Region over the past two weeks, including whether they stem from transmission issues (e.g., from GRIDCo), distribution network faults, maintenance works, overload, illegal connections, or other factors.
2. A clear timeline and action plan for immediate restoration of stable and adequate voltage levels across the affected areas.
3. Confirmation of any preventive measures being implemented to avoid recurrence, such as upgrades to transformers, feeders, or substations.
4. An assurance of compensation or support for verified cases of appliance damage directly attributable to these power quality issues, in line with ECG’s customer service policies and relevant regulatory frameworks.
5. Regular public updates and communication (via local media, ECG’s website, social media, and community notices) regarding the status of resolution efforts.
We urge you to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves, as continued disruptions threaten livelihoods, public health (e.g., food spoilage in refrigerators, inability to power medical devices), education, and overall economic activity in the region.
We look forward to your prompt and positive action to restore reliable electricity supply and rebuild public confidence in ECG’s services.
Thank you for your immediate attention.
Yours faithfully,
Prince Yao Amevi
