Petition: Calling for Direct Congressional Oversight of Utility Companies to Control Rising Costs

To the Honorable Members of the United States Congress:

We, The Undersigned People of the United States, are increasingly burdened by the rising costs of essential utility services, including electricity, natural gas, and water.  In recent years, utility bills have increased at a rate that significantly outpaces general inflation and the cost of living, placing undue financial strain on American households, particularly those with fixed or low incomes.

Recent data indicates that residential electricity prices have risen sharply since 2021, with increases often exceeding overall inflation rates. For instance, electricity costs have climbed more than twice as fast as the broader cost of living in certain periods, contributing to higher monthly energy bills that now average substantially more than just a few years ago. These escalations threaten energy affordability and exacerbate economic inequality at a time when many families are already struggling.

While state public utility commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission provide some regulatory oversight, these mechanisms have proven insufficient to consistently prevent excessive rate hikes that surpass reasonable adjustments for operational costs or inflation. Greater federal involvement is needed to ensure national standards prioritize consumer protection over unchecked profiteering.

We respectfully petition Congress to enact legislation establishing direct oversight of utility companies, including:

Requiring federal review and approval of significant rate increases to ensure they do not exceed the consumer price index or cost-of-living adjustments without clear justification.

Mandating transparency in utility pricing, profits, and infrastructure investments.

Promoting policies that enhance competition, efficiency, and renewable energy adoption to stabilize long-term costs.

Essential utilities are a public necessity, not a luxury. Americans deserve affordable access without fear of unpredictable and excessive bill increases. Congressional action is essential to safeguard the economic well-being of our nation's families and businesses.
