Petition Against Proposed Murphy USA Fuel Station
The Issue
Location: Southwest corner of Kings Hwy & St. Vincent Mall Ave, Shreveport, LA
We, the undersigned residents, property owners, and concerned citizens of Shreveport, strongly oppose the rezoning and Special Use Permit application submitted by Estacado Interests, LLC, to allow construction and operation of a Murphy USA fuel station at the above location. Our reasons for opposition include, but are not limited to:
Traffic & Safety Concerns: Kings Hwy already experiences heavy traffic, with over 25,000 vehicles per day. Adding a fuel station at this busy intersection will further increase congestion and raise the risk of accidents.
Neighborhood Impact: The proposed site is currently within a residential zoning district (R-1-5). Rezoning to commercial use and permitting a fuel station would negatively affect the surrounding neighborhood and set a precedent for further encroachment on residential areas.
Environmental & Health Risks: Gas stations bring increased noise, light pollution, hazardous fuel storage, and potential soil and groundwater contamination, which could endanger nearby homes and families.
Property Values: Proximity to a gas station can lower residential property values, discouraging future investment in the neighborhood.
Quality of Life: Many residents live, work, or send children to schools in the area. A gas station will disrupt the character of the neighborhood and diminish its livability.
We respectfully urge the Metropolitan Planning Commission and Shreveport City Council to: DENY the rezoning request and Special Use Permit for a Murphy USA fuel station at Kings Hwy & St. Vincent Mall Ave.
