The issue

As a devout Buddhist, it deeply pains me to witness the indignity that a prominent Buddhist monk faced recently in Sri Lanka. When the monk was produced in court, his robe was forcibly removed, a blatant disregard for our religious and cultural traditions. This event is not just a violation against an individual; it undermines the very values and doctrines that many Sri Lankans hold dear.

In the Buddhist community, a monk’s robe is not just fabric; it is a symbol of their vows, their path, and their honor. Disrobing a monk against his will is an affront to the dignity and respect that all monastics deserve. It is an act that disrespects our shared heritage and the principles of compassion and understanding that Buddhism stands for.

This incident took place in a region already fraught with religious tensions and serves as a dangerous precedent for how religious figures are treated in legal contexts. It poses a significant threat to the freedom of religion and expression, cornerstones of international human rights standards. While Sri Lanka is a nation deeply enriched by its diverse cultures and religions, such acts contribute to further polarization among communities.

We call upon the International Human Rights Organization to investigate this incident and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to uphold the respect and dignity of Buddhist monks in judicial proceedings. Additionally, we urge for clear guidelines to be established globally, ensuring that no religious figure faces similar treatment in any court of law, honoring the rights and rituals of all spiritual communities.

Religious tolerance and mutual respect must be the pillars upon which our legal systems operate. By taking swift action, we can prevent such injustices from occurring again, fostering a climate of respect and compassion across all societies. Stand with us in advocating for justice and religious respect.

Please sign this petition to demand an inquiry into this incident and to urge for protective measures for all religious figures in legal environments worldwide. Together, we can ensure that such indignities are never repeated.
