PETITION AGAINST CASTLE DOUGLAS ACTIVE TRAVEL PROPOSAL

PETITION AGAINST CASTLE DOUGLAS ACTIVE TRAVEL PROPOSAL
The Issue
Dumfries & Galloway Council, via Swestrans funding, has commissioned Stantec to conduct a feasibility study, carry out engagement and develop concept designs to create a north active travel gateway into Castle Douglas.
Despite 1357 local residents previously completing a Community Survey in 2023 because they thought the official survey was biased and vague, the council appear not to have listened to the overwhelming feedback given by the town, and have created a 2nd draft of the proposal which goes against the wishes of locals.
They appear to be proposing replacing the roundabout at the top of town with a 4-way junction managed by traffic lights. They also appear to be proposing cutting down the trees currently on the roundabout (despite 90% of survey respondents being against this) and adding around 6 sets of new traffic lights to the area of the existing roundabout. The new proposals will increase congestion, pollution and danger for locals and tourists.
The purpose of this petition is to let Dumfries & Galloway Council, Swestrans and Stantec know that we do not support their proposal for these changes and we wish for them to listen to what the community want, instead of putting national policies ahead of local interest.
