A PETITION opposing highrise development on one of the greens at Coorparoo Bowls Club has attracted 4000 signatures. Bowls Queensland, which owns the grounds, intends to take advantage of Brisbane City Council’s aged care amendment to build an 80 unit high-rise development over one of the two natural greens. Save Our Community Green committee intends to present the petition to Brisbane City Council this month. Coorparoo Bowls Club board member and long-term Coorparoo resident James Dunbar said the loss of the club would be a devastating blow to the already increasingly densifying community. “I’m supportive of the recent development of the local area but stress a balance between highrise development and green space,” Mr Dunbar said. “The CBC offers open space and is a functioning community asset enjoyed by all ages and a variety of recreational groups. “Highrise development of this site is not an option.” Save Our Community Green committee chairwoman Megan Homer said the group was sourcing alternative proposals from their support base to the current planned development which would ensure the club’s financial viability. The group will hold a second Community Day event at the CBC in the coming months.
