Do you remember signing the petition for a parallel greenway next to the velorail a few years ago? Well you did and thank you.
- Do you remember signing the petition for a parallel greenway next to the velorail a few years ago. Well done and thank you here is an update
- The parallel path next to the velorail never happened.
- Despite the council getting this petition from a thousand people in the area and over 200 submissions on the Velorail planning application asking for a parallel greenway - nothing happened.......
- The council also received 1,000 submissions on the county plan back in 2021 asking for a greenway on the closed railway and nothing happened......
- Well actually it did, Mayo county council put a clause in the county plan, clause MT09, forbidding the county from even considering a feasibility study for a greenway on the closed railway. Doing the exact opposite of what 1,000 people asked for on the county plan! Hard to believe isn't it?!
- Did you know that even Irish Rail and the Department of Transport made submissions on the county plan asking MCC to use the closed railway route as a greenway, Mayo county council ignored the wishes of the landowner (Irish Rail) and an expression from the Department of Transport supporting a greenway - Why did they do this? Good simple question
- Did you know Sligo county council listened to the Department of Transport and is now planning a greenway from Collooney to Charlestown that will just stop at Charlestown as Mayo county council refuses to take the money on offer to used the closed railway route as a greenway, the red one in the map above.
Did you know the All island Strategic rail review clearly states that whilst Claremorris to Athenry may open as a railway there are no plans to open Claremorris to Collooney. Thats why Sligo is pushing ahead with a greenway on the closed railway from Collooney to Charlestown, they know which side their bread is buttered! - Did you know the current crop of East Mayo Councillors in the Swinford Electoral District who would have been well aware of the widescale public support for a greenway supported the county plan, and did nothing to stop the county plan blocking a greenway. They did not say a word about all the submissions from the public asking for a greenway?
Did you know they will be knocking on your door soon asking to be re-elected? Ask them how they allowed the county plan to have a clause in it which effectively blocks what both Irish Rail and the Department of Transport want and will pay for! Ask them did they listen to over 1,000 submissions on the county plan asking for a greenway? - did you know we live in a democracy that means we can actually give them their marching orders.
Its food for thought this lovely spring day.........Have a look at the greenway map we could have, Mayo county council refuse to give us the one in Red on the map, the East Mayo Greenway, don't forget the councillors coming looking for your vote again.........there could be an alternative to vote for.
