PETCO released a response to employees (read the full response at the following link) Petco Talking Points for Customers- Protest Response & Media Policy

PETCO has not made a press release to the public but instead hides behind closed doors.  A Review of what appears to be Misinformation passed to employees by PETCO to promote the unethical sale of dwarf rabbits:

- PETCO states they are only offering neutered males for sale.
Not only is PETCO irresponsibly promoting the unhealthy extreme breeding practices of dwarf rabbits - this practice will also lead to unwanted female rabbits being born into the back yard breeding facilities.  Typical back yard breeders are well known to either overbreed the females until useless and dispose of or cull the useless born, and the female newborn babies will have no value to PETCO.

- According to PETCO'S history (as linked in the original petition references) they are Not known for high animal care standards and protocols.  In fact, their suppliers/breeders have been arrested for deplorable animal cruelty as well as their stores found practicing cruelty to animals..

-  Rabbits DO NOT make wonderful pets for busy families; this is blatant lie and misinformation.
Rabbits are not low maintenance pets, they require special food, education on care, housing and exotic vet care.  Rabbits are very territorial and not all male rabbits get along.

-  PETCO is claiming to “neuter” male rabbits while portraying this will stop unintentional breeding when in fact, they will be providing unknown numbers of rabbits available to unknowing customers with misinformation and cute gimmick names like “Teddy Bear rabbits” to promote sales.

 - It appears PETCO is falsely advertising and duping the public to believe they are selling “special rabbits” with cute names that are actually dwarf rabbits as a result of extreme breeding, dwarf rabbits have health issues.  As cute as they may look, you should refrain from purchasing teddy rabbits for ethical reasons, because these little rabbits have a problematic breeding history.  Dwarf rabbits that are bred with a round, short, compact body shape suffer in a different way.  The long digestive tract of a rabbit is squashed and this causes digestive disorders.

New rabbit sales at PETCO will only contribute to the issue of overpopulation of thousands of unwanted pet rabbits.  Rabbit rescues are all over capacity, shelters are over capacity and the rabbits/babies are euthanized daily.  Rabbits continue to be dumped in the wild where they cannot survive.
