Persistent Concerns Regarding Pavement & Road Maintenance Corringham & Rotherwick Roads
The Issue
To Barnet Council
We, the undersigned are writing to express our deep concern and ongoing frustration regarding the persistently poor state of our pavements and roads, despite numerous requests made through your website and direct communication with your colleagues.
In spite of our previous attempts to bring attention to the deteriorating conditions, it appears that our concerns are falling on deaf ears. The safety and well-being of our community are at risk due to the continued neglect of pavement maintenance, and it is disheartening that previous requests have not led to any visible improvements.
Yet again, we are bringing your attention to the deplorable neglect of the pavements and roads in our community which now pose a severe health hazard and significant risks to residents and visitors alike.
In recent years we have observed a steep decline in the maintenance of our roads, with numerous potholes, uneven surfaces, cracked and hazardous pavements. This not only affects the aesthetics of our neighbourhood but also endangers the safety of pedestrians and drivers. We are particularly concerned about the potential accidents and injuries that could result from these perilous conditions. Raised and uneven paving stones, protruding tree roots and the paved pathway are hazardous to young children, the elderly, the frail, or those with kids tricycles, pushchairs or wheelchairs & other walking aids which forces them towards the uneven, sloping, kerb edge.
This has been further demonstrated by a 79 year old neighbour falling this week (WC 1st April 2024) due to the uneven pavements and we believe you have been made aware and photos of his injury has been shared with you.
It's a shocking level of neglect and an equally shocking indifference to our alarmed reports. This rapidly worsening neglect of our roads and pavements has become a breeding ground for accidents and makes urgent action imperative.
We kindly request the council to undertakes a thorough inspection and initiate prompt repairs to ensure the safety and well-being of the community members.
It is disheartening to note that while Middleton Road has undergone a complete re-landscape of its pavement, our dilapidated road stands in stark contrast, neglected and deteriorating. This glaring disparity in maintenance raises concerns about the fairness and consistency of the council’s approach to infrastructure improvement.
The lack of maintenance is contributing to the degradation of our local environment. It not only jeopardizes the safety of residents and visitors but also reflects poorly on the overall quality of life in our community and we believe it is the council’s responsibility to address these issues promptly. Adequate investment in the upkeep of our infrastructure is crucial for maintaining a healthy and vibrant community.
We understand that Barnet council, like many others, faces some challenges, but the urgency of addressing this issue cannot be overstated; it is crucial that the allocation of these resources is equitable across all areas. Our community should not feel overlooked or neglected when neighbouring streets are receiving much-needed attention.
We urge you to investigate this matter promptly, assess the conditions of our road, and take corrective action to ensure that the maintenance of pavements is carried out consistently throughout our community.
We appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and trust that the council will take swift and equitable action to rectify the appalling state of our road pavements. This will not only address the immediate safety concerns but also contribute to a sense of fairness and community well-being.
We look forward to hearing about the steps that will be taken to address this issue.
