Permit Dogs in Edmonton Food Establishments, Cafes, Restaurants, and Grocery Stores

Permit Dogs in Edmonton Food Establishments, Cafes, Restaurants, and Grocery Stores
The Issue
As a committed group of dog lovers in Edmonton, we understand the deep bond that exists between humans and their canine companions. Too often, however, we face restrictions and barriers when trying to share our daily lives with our loved ones. One of the most prominent hurdles we face is the prohibition of dogs in food establishments, including cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores.
Dogs have proven to be not only delightful companions, but also a source of emotional support for many individuals. The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) found that pets contribute to overall cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart rate. Furthermore, the presence of dogs has shown to increase human social interaction and decrease feelings of loneliness, positively impacting mental wellness (The American Heart Association, 2013).
Around the world, many cities allow dogs in certain types of eateries under controlled circumstances, which can serve as a model for us. France and Italy, for instance, have selectively incorporated dogs into their food culture, highlighting that with proper regulations, this can be a plausible reality.
By amending current regulations, Edmonton can create an inclusive environment that recognizes the importance of our canine family members. This initiative will also reduce the instances of dogs being left in cars or at home, which can result in separation anxiety for the pets and worry for the owners.
We urge our lawmakers to reconsider current restrictions and find a way to inclusively and safely incorporate dogs into more facets of our everyday life. We believe Edmonton can set a progressive stance on this matter and pave the way for open, dog-friendly policies.
Please join us in asking for the permission of dogs in all food establishments. Sign this petition and show your support for a more dog-friendly Edmonton.
