For years, there has been a (frozen) disagreement on whether or not Pretoria should be renamed Tshwane. And students of politics, history and current affairs know that frozen disagreements carry a risk of re-emerging if not resolved quickly to the satisfaction of everyone concerned.

To prevent a re-emergence of this disagreement, we propose the adoption of Pretoria Mandela DT (District of Tshwane) as the capital city's consensus name.

This will keep each party happy: they'll each have something. And it will promote unity and harmony in South Africa. It would remove the risk of future disagreement and and possible dissatisfaction.

It will preserve the name Pretoria, add the name Tshwane, and link up with the name Mandela, to the benefit of all South Africans.

If approved, this would not be the first time a great capital city carries the name of several notable persons. The US capital, Washington DC (District of Columbia), is named after George Washington, first President of the United States; Christopher Columbus, one of the most notable pioneers of the New World; and Columbia, the historical female national personification of the United States.

If implemented, the name Pretoria Mandela DT (District of Tshwane) would honour:  Chief Tshwane, a legendary and pioneering chief in what's today's South Africa; Andries Pretorius, one the most notable figures in South African history; Marthinus Pretorius, a highly strategic and visionary leader who founded Pretoria by buying two farms and organizing the purchase into an urban layout which he named Pretoria Philadelphia; and Nelson Mandela, the global icon of freedom who nobly led South Africa out of Apartheid.

We therefore call on the President of South Africa; the South African Parliament; the Minister of Arts and Culture of South Africa, the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC), and the great Peoples of South Africa to promote Pretoria Mandela DT (District of Tshwane) by signing this petition and taking the constitutional steps to make it happen.
