Permanently discontinue Apple’s Screen Time feature

Permanently discontinue Apple’s Screen Time feature
The Issue
Everyday Americans, especially those under 18, are directly encountering Apple’s unchecked Screen Time feature with no way to turn it off. It affects countless users worldwide, limiting freedom and autonomy, particularly for young users who are unjustly perceived to have problematic screen habits. Parents, in an effort to manage their children's app usage, rely on this feature, believing that it acts as a necessary boundary, when in reality, it too often paints a false narrative of dependency on technology.
Apple’s Screen Time feature was introduced as a tool to allow users and parents to monitor and manage device usage. While well-intentioned, it has caused significant frustration among users who feel constrained by its automatic monitoring and reporting features. For teenagers and young adults, it's important to cultivate personal responsibility and independent decision-making concerning their screen time without feeling monitored or shamed by technology.
Furthermore, Screen Time doesn't allow for simple, user-friendly adjustments or the option to completely disable it for those who find its presence more of a hindrance than a help. A 2021 survey indicated that over 65% of American teenagers felt stressed and restricted by parental controls and screen monitoring features, which diminish user trust and autonomous self-regulation. If any family member refuses to listen to their parents or pick up calls, they will have been interrupted by this feature which is unfortunately not cancelable or able to be disconnected.

Instead of forcing a blanket control system, Apple should prioritize fostering a dialogue about healthy technology use. Empowering users with education initiatives or developing advisory programs on how to efficiently manage their screen requirements, without the rigid confines of mandatory monitoring systems like Screen Time, could yield much better results.
Moreover, the sheer difficulty in opting out of Screen Time leaves little room for personal choice, which should be fundamental when technology intersects so closely with our daily lives. An option to permanently disable this feature would restore agency to users and ensure that they do not feel disproportionately controlled and surveilled by their devices.
If Apple’s expansion of the screen time feature continues unchecked, teenagers who have very strict parents who do not let them do what they want and only control them to do only what they expect will not be able to use their devices for more than two hours, leaving them uneasy end on edge and throw uncontrollable tantrums.
We urge Apple to listen to the voices of its consumers and prioritize freedom of choice over pervasive surveillance. It's time Apple acknowledges the critical voices of its user community and adapts accordingly. Sign this petition to encourage Apple to permanently discontinue the Screen Time feature, allowing all users the autonomy they deserve over their devices.
