Join the protection of the seabed! Say NO to deep sea mining in Perú

La causa

SPANISH VERSION

July of this year will define the future of the largest but also least explored areas of the earth: the deep sea.

The seabed covers 95% of the ocean volume and is one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet. They are also home to a great biodiversity of little-known marine species, which is still unknown to humanity.

Seabed mining is an activity that seeks to extract minerals and metals from the seabed to produce batteries, using huge machines that weigh more than a blue whale, destroying and contaminating all life and structure of the seabed.

We have until July of this year to take action, since July 24 until the 28 representatives from countries around the world will meet at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Assembly in Jamaica to vote in favor or against the initiation of this activity.

So far, countries in the region such as Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Dominican Republic and Costa Rica have already expressed their opposition. But Peru has not yet announced a position.

As a coastal country that depends economically on fishery resources and the ecosystem services they provide, Peru must also make a statement on the position it will take as a country in the face of the possible initiation of this activity.

Add your signature! And stand for Peru to say NO to seabed mining.

With your signature, we will be able to ask the government to send an observer delegation to the assembly in July and join the global position against this activity, promoting a moratorium.

Today, as never before in humanity, we are in time to stop an activity that could affect all life that depends on the ocean, including us.
