Change Aunt Jemima Brand Name to Nancy Green's

The Issue

Nancy Green, the original woman who was hired to play the character of Aunt Jemima, was a woman that deserves due recognition. After the company struggled to take off, Nancy Green's ability to tell stories, to cook, and to spread cheer gave the Aunt Jemima company the wings it needed to soar. Unfortunately, many people today only know her as Aunt Jemima. They are unaware that the true history of the Aunt Jemima character comes from a minstrel show in which a man in drag and blackface would sing "Old Aunt Jemima" to mock and degrade slaves. Yet, instead of finding a more suitable name for their company after purchase, The R.T. Davis Milling Company searched for a woman who fit the description in order to be just another Aunt Jemima...a slave mammy.

We are requesting that honor and integrity be restored to the name Nancy Green by giving credit where credit is due. Change the Aunt Jemima name to Nancy Green as a way to preserve the proper history of a woman who was born in slavery and worked hard as a spokeswoman for a company in order to feed her family and do missionary and philanthropist work in her community. Without this name change, her name and her legacy risk being forever erased and forgotten.
