Petition updateOppose all 3 stages of WestConnex

Letter to Penny

I've now written to Penny about reaching the 89 signature goal. Dear Penny, Please oppose the construction of all 3 stages of WestConnex. My understanding is that you support the current NSW ALP position which is to build two-thirds of it and further extend the M4 all the way to the city. As you will be aware, I have been running a petition to get you to do this. The premise of the petition is simple. You went to the state election on several commitments. One was the commitment regarding WestConnex outlined above. Another was not to return to the Legislative Council if you didn't win the seat of Newtown. You broke the second commitment. Now, being charitable, if one has a commitment to the democratic will of the people and if subsequently there is a sufficient level of public support to do so then perhaps such a course of action is justified. In assessing that level of support, a suitable metric could be the number of supporters to the change.org petition that ran explicitly asking you to return to the LC. That particular petition reached 89 signatures before you decided to do so. That is not to say that only 89 people in NSW wanted you to return to the LC, just that it may stand in as a measure for the relative level of support. The petition I ran has now exceeded 89 signatures. So the level of public support for you to oppose all 3 stages of WestConnex is very likely greater than that for your return to the LC. Therefore, in consistency with your own standards, and in the spirit of democracy and justice, I politely request for you to publicly oppose all 3 stages of WestConnex. If you choose not to do that, then I also politely ask for you to justify that decision, explaining the flaws in the above argument. Regards, Andrew Chuter
