Pay Veterans the Full GI Bill Amount They Earned for School
The Issue
I am so fed up with this. I did what I was supposed to do, my school accepts veterans, certifies us, and lets us use our GI Bill, and somehow I am still sitting here trying to figure out why I might have to take out student loans first and then hope my GI Bill payments are enough to clean up the mess after. That makes no sense. If this benefit is supposed to help veterans go to school, it should actually help us stay in school without going into more debt.
I am a full-time student in an accelerated program. My tuition is about $1,900 a month. The Montgomery GI Bill amount for full-time students went up from around $2,200 a month to $2,600 a month, but I am not getting anything close to that. I am getting about $1,170, and I was even told that after Christmas break I might get closer to $700 and I’ve gotten many different answers because instead of simply allowing a full-time student the full GI Bill amount I’ve only received half answers of what I could possibly get, all except the full amount. How is a veteran supposed to plan for school, rent, food, and bills when the benefit changes like that from month to month and never lines up with what school actually costs?
The Department of Veterans Affairs needs to fix the GI Bill payment structure so veterans are paid the full amount they qualify for based on their real enrollment, including accelerated programs, instead of shorting people because of a calendar-month formula that does not match how schools actually operate. Veterans should not have to borrow money, turn back to FAFSA, or gamble with debt while waiting for the benefit they earned to show up correctly. If a school is approved, if a veteran is certified, and if they are enrolled full-time, the payment should reflect that in a way that actually covers the education it is supposed to support.
I am speaking up because I know I cannot be the only veteran dealing with this. If this has happened to you too, or if you believe veterans should not have to fight this hard just to use their education benefits, please sign this petition and help demand that the Department of Veterans Affairs pay us fairly and fix this broken system.
